Annual Conference Round Table Discussion – Renewables

At the Annual Conference and AGM held on February 10th, Adam Corney (Plymouth University) and Nick Kirsop-Taylor (RENGEN SW) hosted the round table discussion on renewables. Many members took advantage of the opportunity to discuss and hear about the opportunities within the renewables sector for marine businesses in the South West. In Adam’s own words ‘there are opportunities now and in the future – this is going to happen’

Adam’s summary of the discussion was as follows:

  • There are significant opportunities for all marine leisure companies in the marine renewables market – but you have to build networks and contacts and go and look for them.
  • Use of renewable technologies eg. solar on your own premises can make substantial savings
  • The opportunities may be in support of/ in partnership with existing customers not necessarily brand new ones.
  • Developments in this market in the future are likely to involve small scale community schemes as much as major multinational projects
  • Regen SW are an Exeter-based trade association who can help with info and contacts

The South West Marine Energy Park should provide excellent information and marketing/networking opportunities for local businesses. You can get the prospectus at REGENSW

There is an existing supply chain directory of SW companies in this market at the REGENSW website. Look for potential customers, suppliers and competitors there!
