BMF South West spearheads first networking event for students and businesses at London Boat Show

The South West region of the British Marine Federation has set up the first student to business networking event to take place at the London Boat Show.  The “Students meet Business” event will take place on Tuesday 7th January, and is designed to enable University and Further Education students to experience the diversity of jobs and opportunities available in the marine industry.  Over 50 students from colleges in the south west on courses including marine science, engineering, yacht business and boat building have already signed up to take part.

The students will be welcomed at the Excel Exhibition Centre with the reception hosted by the British Marine Federation.  Volunteer business ambassadors from the BMF SW will then introduce the students to key people in the industry, enabling the students to experience the range and diversity of careers available, ranging from yacht design and build, port operations, equipment manufacturing and engineering, marine tourism and chartering, through to sales and brokerage, marina management, superyacht crewing, legal, HR, sales and marketing.

The initiative was developed by the BMF SW Board, following interest from students at Plymouth University and South Devon College’s Noss Marine Academy keen to find out more about the job opportunities available to them on completion of their courses.  BMF SW Secretary Paul Singer said, “We recently held an informal student and business networking event in Plymouth after one of our Board Meetings, and from that we realised that young people in further education are keen and eager to find out more and make connections with business and individuals who will help them get into the industry when they finish their studies.  The London Boat Show is the ideal showcase and opportunity to network under one roof, and with support from the BMF we have funded the travel, arranged free admission, and set up the ambassador support and networking opportunities.  Each student has to complete a form highlighting their course, interests, key skills and requesting three companies they would like to meet.  Some of the students will also be developing this into an assignment for their Foundation Degree course work.”
